Senior Specialist For SUTD-Fabrication Laboratory

The SUTD Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) is a one-stop "hands-on" facility for faculty, researchers, undergraduates, and SUTD strategic partners to explore, experiment with digital design and turn their ideas and concepts into reality. Currently, the FabLab comprises of metal & wood shop, digital prototyping hub, digital fabrication Lab (electronic), Makerspaces, Assembly Space, Satellite Labs & Mobile Labs.

Under its plan for the digital transformation, a new journey is in the pipeline to transform FabLab into FabLab 4.0, a learning lab for Ind 4.0 - Smart Teaching Factory Approach.

Job Purpose

Assist the Director to oversee and manage a team of technical specialists to provide fabrication support & learning workshop to faculty, researchers, undergraduates, and SUTD strategic partners to make designs into reality by leveraging Industry 4.0 capabilities:

  • Manage and optimize resources related to the implementation of the section’s goals.
  • To ensure smooth daily operations, maintenance, and management of FabLab activities, implement rule & regulation for safety, and conduct practical training for students/users based on the requirement of the SUTD curriculum.
  • Demonstrate laboratory machines or equipment to impart knowledge to and develop skills in students/researchers.
  • Develop policies, systems, and procedures.
  • Introduce and develop industry 4.0 capabilities.
  • Work with faculty members in the design and implementation of Fab Lab-related curriculum.

Responsibilities and accountabilities

  • In-charge of day-to-day operations in a specialization domain.
  • Co-ordinate the setting up of FabLab 4.0 development & facilities which includes sourcing for vendors, procurement of equipment & supplies and acceptance testing of products and services.
  • Sets and enforces safety policies and operational procedures comply with the Workplace Safety and Health Act.
  • Coordinates schedules and efforts of other laboratory staff, technicians, contractors, student assistants, research assistants, visiting scholars, postdoctoral fellows, and others to ensure safety.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in digital manufacturing processes and maintenance.
  • Identify new techniques and technologies related to design and fabrication; evaluates and procure new machines.
  • Work closely with faculty to uphold the SUTD’s educational philosophy and to communicate its vision to the staff, students, and the public.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or higher
  • About 2 years of working experiences in each discipline listed (at least 3 areas):
    • Design and Model Making
    • Additive Manufacturing
    • Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE)
    • Mobile Apps development
    • CNC/CAM Machining
  • Experience in Augmented Reality (AR) / Virtual Reality (VR) / Mobile App development will be advantageous.
  • A hands-on individual familiar with fabrication shop operation and a wide range of tools, materials, and laboratory technologies.
  • Technically inclined & able to lead a team to provide efficient support in making POC model.
  • Must be able to conduct short courses in additive manufacturing, CAD/CAM, engineering workshop practice and safety training, including WHSA and other EHS protocol.
  • Must be able to work well under pressure, both independently and as part of a team, tolerate ambiguity, and remain flexible as situations demand and demonstrated excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Resourceful, proactive and results-oriented.
  • May be required to work on some evenings and weekends as needed by project and teaching schedules, or shift work.
