We are launching the research project Next Residential High-Rise – Comparative study and analytical modelling for flexible housing typologies based on modularity and composite structural systems. The goal of the research is to develop models that measure ecological and social sustainability of residential high-rise projects in tropical cities. It aims to assess the ecological impact of different ratios of composite concrete and wood systems and the benefits of inherent flexibility. It utilises modifiable infill system with elements made of timber in order to achieve flexible floor plans that are capable of responding to demographic changes. The research explores a new category of residential typologies and establishes holistic measurement criteria for the life-cycle of building stock with an increased ease of use to help decision-making in the design process. The research team will be led by SUTD faculty in collaboration with industry partner Arup and academic partners at MIT.

For this project, we are looking for motivated and talented candidates for the following positions. 

RESEARCH ASSISTANT/S (100%)

The research assistant will work in the fields of mathematical modelling, data sourcing and data visualisation, and ideally have basic programming skills for the implementation of findings into a software tool. The person should lead the integration of extracted data into the visualisation of a life cycle assessment (LCA) model and should work on the translation into a software module. For the latter, the scope will have to be determined in early research phases and could be a plugin to an existing software or a standalone web-based tool. The researcher will also participate in publications, academic papers and conference presentations. 

A Bachelor degree in computer science, civil/product/mechanical/systems engineering, integrated sustainable design or other relevant fields is required, a Master degree in a relevant field would be a plus.

Mathematical modelling and software tools 

Retrieving respective demographic data in the residential market and building industries, assessing the changes in user demands and developing a mathematical model to predict occupational patterns in residential buildings in the future. 

Developing an applicable computational methodology and framework to integrate demographic data and its impact on future user demand with the life-cycle assessment models. Either translation into a software module or the coordination of such work with the intention to distribute the tool to practitioners, policymakers, researchers and students - for the evaluation of different solutions in early design stages. Experience in basic software development would be beneficial.
