Specialist / Senior Specialist for SUTD Fabrication Laboratory


The SUTD Fabrication Lab is a one-stop makerspace facility for faculty, researchers, undergraduates, and SUTD strategic partners to experiment with digital fabrication to turn ideas and concepts into reality. The Fabrication Lab basic concept and framework are mirrored of MIT, Boston, and comprises of the metal shop, woodshop, digital lab, electronics lab, project lab, and assembly & sheet-metal shop. 


Job Purpose


Technical Specialists are in charge of a section day-to-day operation, administrative duties, and FabLab 4.0 transformation:


  • Oversee & Manage resources related to the implementation of the section’s goals

  • To ensure daily operations, maintenance, and management of FL activities, implement rule & regulation for safety, and conduct practical training for students/users based on the requirement of the SUTD curriculum.

  • Conduct practical training to impart knowledge and develop skills proficiency of undergraduates

  • Maintain & Develop EHS policies, systems, and procedures

    Responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Overall in-charge of operations in the Digital Lab and Satellite Labs.

  • Oversee the setting up of laboratories facilities which include sourcing for vendors, procurement of equipment & supplies and acceptance testing of products and services

  • Sets and enforces safety policies and operational procedures comply with the Workplace Safety and Health Act

  • Coordinates schedules and efforts of other laboratory staff, technicians, contractors, student assistants, research assistants, visiting scholars, postdoctoral fellows, and others to ensure safety

  • Assist faculty, researchers, and students in the usage of technologies in the Laboratories

  • Extensive hands-on experience in digital fabrication and maintenance.

  • Identify new techniques and technologies related to design and fabrication; evaluates and procure new machines

  • Work closely with faculty to uphold the SUTD’s educational philosophy and to communicate its vision to the staff, students, and the public



  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Engineering

  • About 5 years of working experience in Design Engineering and Ind 4.0 setting up

  • Experience in additive manufacturing or CNC/CAD/CAM will be advantageous

  • A hands-on individual familiar with fabrication shop operation and a wide range of tools, materials, and laboratory technologies.

  • Technically inclined & able to lead a team to provide efficient support in making the POC model.

  • Must be able to conduct short courses in additive manufacturing, CAD/CAM, engineering workshop practice and safety training, including WHSA and other EHS protocols

  • Must be able to work well under pressure, both independently and as part of a team, tolerate ambiguity, and remain flexible as situations demand and demonstrated excellent organizational and communication skills

  • Resourceful, proactive and results-oriented

  • May be required to work on some evenings and weekends as needed by project and teaching schedules or shift work.
