Manager – Environmental Health and Safety, SUTD

Environmental Health and Safety department at SUTD partner with all stakeholders and SUTD community to maintain a safe, healthy and environmentally sustainable campus. EHS department at SUTD engage our stakeholder by delivering specialist safety and health support to enable our stakeholders to carry out diverse research, learning and work activities safely.

SUTD EHS is looking for a dynamic, seasoned safety professional to join the team to help us deliver various EHS program. The successful candidate will work in the EHS team and work with academics, researchers, students, staff and contractors in identifying EHS controls. The ideal candidate will be an influencer who could develop and conduct training and various promotional activities to enable students and staff in establishing EHS risk control and ensuring compliance with EHS legal requirements. The candidate will be required to work effectively across departments, and should possess a technical background, coupled with a good understanding of the EHS requirements and activities at Institutes of Higher Learning or research centre and related landscape.

Job Description

  • Formulate, implement, and evaluate policies and strategies for health and safety protection and surveillance of staff and student, to meet legislative requirements and promote employee’s health and safety.
  • Plan, develop and evaluate methods and processes for gathering, analysing, interpreting and presenting data and information for continued improvement. Communicate trends and advise on action plans to meet statutory and voluntary requirements for health and safety.
  • Develop and implement workplace safety initiatives, set and enforce safety standards, conduct safety audits and help in developing a strong safety culture in the organization.
  • Collaborate with Academics, staff, students, researchers and contractors to understand needs and provide guidance on various EHS and legal requirements and help them with the identification and implementation of control measures to prevent accidents/incidents.
  • Analyse and present audit/inspection reports, accident reports and other trends in EHS related compliance matters on campus and propose suggestions methods for continual improvement.
  • Work in partnership at senior level with other appropriate agencies and professionals to provide expert guidance, develop, implement and evaluate policies and strategies, when health and Safety input is required.
  • Part of the organisational safety and other committees and do the secretariate role as and when required. Participate in University level and national level committees as and when nominated
  • Conduct investigations on EHS related incidents and be part of the emergency response team by establishing procedures, maintenance of emergency equipment and keeping necessary documentation.
  • Assist and support EHS head and staff on the maintenance of statutory equipment, safety documentation, website and SharePoint,  and other EHS related duties assigned and implementation and maintenance of various EHS policies and procedures on campus.

Requirements

  • The eligibility criteria below are not exhaustive. The candidate should ideally:
  • Have received a Bachelor’s in Engineering, Science or related disciplines with a strong passion in environment, health and safety;
  • Have at least 5 years of working experience in workplace safety health or related fields, preferably in R&D or Institute of higher learning. A candidate registered as a WSHO with MOM, FSM with SCDF will have added advantage;
  • Have sound and updated knowledge of various Workplace Safety & Health, Environment legislation and Regulatory requirements.
  • Understanding of complexities of a university’s operations, appreciation of the challenges of proposing/implementing various policies and programs in a uniquely diverse and knowledge-based research environment
  • The person should be with sense of urgency, independent, meticulous, reliable with good communication, writing, negotiation, influencing and change management skills.
  • Be skilled in Microsoft applications, preferably knowledge in SharePoint and website content management.
