Job Description

Singapore University of Technology & Design is embarking on its next phase of growth. SUTD is searching for faculty members in all areas of Design, including Design Thinking, Business Model Innovation, Design Engineering, Systems Thinking, and Digital and Data-Driven Design. Education, research, service, and practice interests may also include Design Pedagogy, Design Studies, Cognitive Sciences of Design, and Social Psychology of Design.

Job Requirements

The applicant(s) and candidate(s) should demonstrate deep academic and industry knowledge in one or more of the following areas: product and industrial design, product development and evolution, complex systems design (systems of systems), business and organizational design, and / or design innovation. Applications of the candidate’s(s’) research and practice may align to the strategic growth areas of the University, including healthcare, cities, aviation, or artificial intelligence; and other areas of importance to communities, regions, cities, and nations.

The candidate(s) should possess a strong creative foundation as an industrial designer, design engineer, business / organizational designer, and / or systems designer, with a passion for pushing the limits across engineering, architecture and the design disciplines, ranging from computational applications, systems and tools; to design innovation, human-machine interfaces, human-computer interfaces, user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, design-by-analogy, advanced manufacturing and prototyping for design, methods in product development and innovation, design methods and processes, machine-system design, design for product and system flexibility, design for additive manufacturing, reverse engineering, and design teaching and learning methods.

To be successful in the role, the faculty member(s) should have a deep understanding and appreciation of design methodology and theory, methods for early design stages, product service systems, user interface design and user experience, social diversity (in relation to culture, age, gender & economics), and design research methodology.
The candidate(s) should be able to demonstrate expertise in the practice, history and theory of design thinking and techniques, and have experience in a variety of areas across engineering, technical and design fields. Candidates must show evidence of their innovation in their pedagogical approaches, research, and practice, and be forward thinking about skills and literacies required to respond to complex global conditions and societal needs.
It would be advantageous that the candidate(s) has/have experience and/or intention in applying AI/computational/machine learning tools in design projects.

Candidates should possess a PhD in an engineering or design related fields, with demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels; in service to the university, profession, and community; and in developing and maintaining an active and funded research program. For some candidates, depending on the field of study, a Masters’ degree may be sufficient if such a degree is the accepted norm for a faculty member in their field. Again, all candidates should be committed to the above areas of excellence.
