Senior Specialist, FAB Lab (Contract)
Overview:
The Digital Fabrication Senior Specialist at SUTD will be a key driver in supporting student projects, design assignments, and innovation, particularly in the areas of product design engineering and architecture. With a deep passion for making and problem-solving through design and engineering, the specialist will focus on facilitating hands-on fabrication for students who are makers and tinkerers at heart. The role will involve managing key fabrication technologies such as 3D printers (FDM, SLS, SLA, PolyJet), laser cutters, CNC machining, and more. In addition to supporting fabrication projects, the specialist will motivate and mentor students in their journey of exploration and creation.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- 3D Printing Operations (FDM, SLS, SLA, PolyJet):
- Operate and maintain all 3D printers, ensuring they are fully functional and properly calibrated.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting to students and staff working on 3D printing projects, assisting with machine usage and optimal printing practices.
- Manage material resources (resin, filament, powder) to ensure smooth 3D printing workflows.
- Conduct training and safety sessions for students and staff on various 3D printing technologies.
- Laser Cutting Operations:
- Ensure laser cutting equipment is well-maintained, calibrated, and ready for student use.
- Provide troubleshooting assistance for students and staff, helping them achieve precise and safe cuts for their projects.
- Deliver safety training focused on laser cutting operations and proper machine handling.
- Project Support & Student Advising:
- Actively support students on their design and fabrication projects, offering expert guidance in 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, and other advanced fabrication techniques.
- Advise on material selection, fabrication methods, and integration of technologies like electronics and programming to elevate the quality of student projects.
- Assist students in choosing the most suitable digital fabrication technologies and materials, helping them realize their design ideas effectively.
- Instructional Design & Teaching:
- Develop engaging instructional materials and lead hands-on workshops for students in digital fabrication technologies, including 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, and electronics.
- Enhance student learning experiences by integrating digital fabrication techniques into course assignments and projects, empowering students to take ownership of their creations.
- Stay updated with emerging technologies and incorporate them into the Fab Lab, such as VR/AR, advanced scanning, and design creation, expanding the Fab Lab’s educational offerings.
- Technology Integration & Innovation:
- Evaluate and introduce the latest digital fabrication tools and technologies to keep the Fab Lab at the forefront of innovation.
- Collaborate with faculty and students to explore and implement new processes and tools that support cutting-edge student projects in product design, architecture, and engineering.
- Continuously improve the lab’s capabilities, ensuring that students have access to industry-relevant equipment and techniques for their assignments and personal projects.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, industrial design, product design, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in digital fabrication, including hands-on experience with 3D printing, laser cutting, and other fabrication tools.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining a wide range of digital fabrication equipment such as 3D printers, CNC machines, and laser cutters.
- Experience in teaching, instructional design, and developing training materials tailored for student learning.
- Strong understanding of fabrication safety protocols, ensuring a safe and productive working environment in the Fab Lab.
