The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) seeks to hire a qualified individual to fill the position of the Senior Research Assistant / Research Assistant, ISTD, SUTD, for the project “Shadow-based Patch Management System for SCADA DMS/EMS”. ISTD (Information Systems Technology and Design) Pillar is involved in high-quality education and cutting-edge research in cyber security. At the core are fundamental disciplines of computer science and electrical engineering. The cyber-security research is carried out in close collaboration with iTrust, the Centre for Research in Cyber Security which was established collaboratively by the SUTD and the Ministry of Defence, Singapore (MINDEF).

The project is funded by Energy Market Authority of Singapore under National Cybersecurity R&D Grant Call and is a collaborative project involving a commercial company and SUTD. The Senior Research Assistant / Research Assistant will report to Professor David Yau (SUTD), and will be required to work alongside researchers and collaborating company’s engineers, on the research and development deliverables towards a system and methodology for patch application in CPS involving electrical power grids. The focus will be on the development of systems for testing reliability of software system before and after patch application. The Senior Research Assistant / Research Assistant will be involved in the development of models of SCADA based EMS/DMS and their simulation from the perspective of patch application. Suitable algorithmic paradigms and techniques will be used as appropriate. A prototype must be developed as a proof-of-concept (POC) and to be tested/deployed in the test-bed environment which will be housed in SUTD but designed for final deployment in collaborator’s site and customer premises.

 

An ideal candidate would be an independent and resourceful individual and an excellent team player with good interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent writing and presentation development skills are required. Since the project is Translational/commercialization project, the candidate can expect to have a huge potential for applied research, hands-on deployment on a commercial SCADA DMS/EMS systems and further potential for spin-offs.

 

Qualifications and requirements:

  • A Masters’ degree in Computer Science (CS), Computer Engineering (CE) or Electrical Engineering (EE) with focus on systems, database and networks. In the case of those with EE background relevant experience with Power Systems, SCADA, and embedded software development will be considered as suitable alternatives.
  • Exceptional candidates with Bachelors in CS, CE or EE with at least three years relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Basic exposure to cyber security and / or machine learning / AI are highly desirable. Experience in system software and patch management involving SCADA for cyber physical systems will be an added advantage
  • Familiar with basic programming languages (C++, Java) and scripting languages, for example, Python, Javascript or Powershell etc.  
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
