The SUTD-MIT International Design Centre (IDC) is a leading global hub for innovation-ready design research, science and practice. The mission of the IDC is to drive design research and innovation, in collaboration with a wide spectrum of global enterprise, government and social stakeholders. Specifically, it is defined by the following three core objectives: Advancing design theory and methodology, using Design to address key societal challenges, and integrating design theory and methods with design practice.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our multi-disciplinary team of researchers and work on a research program with the overall aim to conceptualize, develop and evaluate Artificial Intelligence (AI) based methods and platforms for assessing design learning at the tertiary education level in Singapore. One of the main aims of the program is to conceptualize, develop and evaluate efficient and effective assessment measures for design learning. A specific aim of the research program is to develop assessment measures and platform for design competencies, as specified in Skillsfuture’s Skills Framework for Design.


We are looking for candidates who can:

  • Support the PI in the design, development and execution of the research program,
  • Lead literature search and state of the art review,
  • Undertake the research on and development of measures for the assessment of design learning
  • Lead qualitative and quantitative data collection in academic settings, such as student & teacher surveys, interviews, focus groups as well as student assessment data.
  • Undertake qualitative & quantitative data analysis,
  • Lead research dissemination, including conference papers and articles in peer-reviewed international journals
  • Take responsibility for, manage, and conduct administrative and management tasks associated with the research program
  • Perform other assignments as determined by the Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigators

The candidate will be working closely with the PIs, the research assistant in the project, collaborators in SUTD & polytechnics as well as researchers in related projects. The candidate is expected to participate in IDC meetings, workshops and other events, and contribute to their organisation. They will play a crucial role in the conceptual and methodological innovations required by the assigned project as a collective endeavour; lead, and contribute to, academic publications and project reports; participate in team meetings; engage in presentations; and be involved in the co-organisation of workshops and other events related to the assigned project/s.

The candidate is expected to be motivated, independent and resourceful and an excellent team player with good interpersonal and communication skills, as well as good writing and presentation development skills. 


  • A PhD in degree related to Engineering/Architectural Design and/or Education, with an interest in Design and Design Education. 
  • Evidence of successful publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals
  • Knowledge of Engineering/Architectural Design & Design methods
  • Knowledge in applications of qualitative analysis software
  • Experience in education research would be advantageous
  • Working knowledge of machine learning techniques would be advantageous.
  • Outstanding research and analytical skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills

Ability to work well as a member of a team and collaborate with colleagues at all levels.
